Canal Barn Bunkhouse is a single story building that has been made as accessible as possible to disabled people. PHAB Wales have assessed this holiday accommodation and recommend it is ideally suited for up to 9 wheelchair users, but that 12 can be accommodated where required. We have even had the 18 man British Wheelchair Basketball Squad stay with us during their preparations for the Athens Paralympics, where they won a brilliant Bronze Medal. This practical experience gained through of use by disabled people tells us the Bunkhouse meets Category 2 of the National Accessible Scheme Standard, i.e. "suitable for wheel-chair users accompanied by a capable helper".

This is what a PHAB group said about the Bunkhouse!“This was a new venue and venture and the 19 members who attended had positive comments especially as to its location - fresh air and scenic surroundings - with the opportunity to meet with others, make friends, experience the canal barge, rural crafts, theatre, historic Brecon town, canoeing, horse riding and other activities. The Bunkhouse is well located, easily accessible and disabled friendly, clean and warm, with excellent wash facilities and helpful friendly owners.” |
The Bunkhouse sleeps up to 24 people and is single story without any steps, nor are there any in the graded hard surfaced parking area and garden paths. The bunk-beds are large firm and very comfortable, with all 12 lower bunk-beds set at wheelchair transfer level. 2 of the 5 bathrooms are specially equipped for wheelchair users. The corridors and doorways are extra wide, and all light switches and power points are at an easily accessible height. Only the kitchen isn't readily usable by disabled people, so we've even provided the perfect excuse to get out of doing any cooking or washing up.
Situated at the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Canal Barn Bunkhouse has a superb setting on the canal towpath near Brecon town centre. The towpath is part of Lon Las Cymru (Sustrans Route 8 - the Cross Wales Cycle Route) and has been graded and surfaced for wheelchair users. The result is that disabled residents at the Bunkhouse can either follow the Canal into Brecon town or head the other way through some breathtaking scenery to the canal lock two miles away, and from there follow the country lanes into the Brecon Beacons themselves, without encountering any steps.
There are several places nearby from where wheelchair users can fish. The whole of the towpath along the Canal outside the Bunkhouse provides almost unlimited access for the disabled coarse fisherman, and for game/river fisherman just down the lane from the Bunkhouse there are two fishing stands on the banks of the river Usk specifically designed for wheelchair fisherman.
We recommend Cantref Riding Centre to disabled visitors who want to go horse riding. The Centre is about 2 miles away and in addition to riding and pony trekking for the disabled also has an accessible ‘adventure farm’ and ‘play barn’, plus a cafe for refreshments.
The more adventurous who wish to participate in some of the numerous outdoor activities available in the Brecon Beacons should see our Outdoor Activities pages, where a number of the Activity Providers listed are equipped to supply outdoor activities to those with disabilities.
