| A moderate to strenuous walk involving two stiff climbs separated by relatively easy sections, this walk takes in the wealth of historic sites to the north of Brecon and gives wonderful panoramic views from the Black Mountains across the Central Beacons to the Carmarthen Fans. | Pen-y-Crug Hill Fort |

It starts with a sharp climb to Slwch Twmp Iron Age Hill Fort, and then a stroll through the northern edge of Brecon skirting the Cathedral Groves to Brecon Cathedral, followed by a long steady climb past Maen-du Well, one of the best preserved Celtic style wells in Wales, to Pen-y-Crug a much larger and better preserved Iron Age Hill Fort than Slwch Twmp. From here you drop down to circle the base of Pen-y-Crug through the village of Cradoc to the Roman Cavalry Fort of Y Gaer. |

The return route then follows a bridleway, believed to be an old Roman Road, back into Brecon passing the boating pool and the Promenade to the Usk Bridge, providing an excuse to ‘rest your feet and recover’ at the Boars Head pub that has an excellent selection of locally brewed ales and a patio overlooking the river. The walk is about about 9 miles / 14 Km (Optional shorter route is 5 miles / 8 Km), so allow around 6 hours (3 hours for optional shorter route) excluding stops. A detailed route map and description, plus relevant OS Map, are available free for Bunkhouse residents to use. |
