Within 3 km (2 miles) of the start of the Canal at Brecon are panoramic views of the central peaks of the Brecon Beacons leading to Brynich, where there is a lock and the four-arched aqueduct that spans the river Usk. After crossing the aqueduct follow the Canal towpath to Pencelli, about 6km (4 miles) from the Bunkhouse, where the Royal Oak Pub (Tel: 01874 665396) has a garden backing onto the Canal and does an excellent Sunday lunch. The Canal then leads to Talybont-on-Usk, 10km (6 miles) from the Bunkhouse, where there are further ‘watering holes’. From here the walker or cyclist can follow the Taff Trail up into the Brecon Beacons themselves, or stay with the Canal which passes through the 375 yards long Ashford Tunnel and on to the five locks at Llangynidr, 15km (10 miles) away and about the limit for walkers from the Bunkhouse, especially as there is a further canal side ‘watering hole’ at the Coach and Horses (Tel: 01874 730245) to enjoy.

After Llangynidr the Canal remains at one level for 35km (23 miles) as it follows the 350 foot contour, hugging the hillside on one of the longest lock free stretches of canal in the UK. Just below Crickhowell the valley widens as the Canal passes above Abergavenny, with the town’s attendant hills of Table Mountain, the Sugar Loaf and Skirrid Fawr. Then on through Llanfoist and Goytre to the present limit of navigable water at Five Locks in Pontnewydd, 50km (35 miles) from Brecon. For much of its length the Canal runs parallel with the river Usk, sometimes on a gentle slope and at others hanging onto an almost sheer mountainside, providing magnificent views over one of the most stunning and scenic valleys.
